I have taken this to heart and present bass guitar amplifier, a site for reviews, articles, and who knows what else. I have also decided to add some articles from guest authors, and some bass guitar equipment reviews.

You know as well as anyone if you play the bass guitar that it is an often unappreciated instrument in many genres of music. I don’t believe that even if my main instruments are guitars. I occasionally sit in on sessions and play the bass, and am amazed at the proficiency of many of the great Latin and jazz bass players.

I would love to hear from any of you bass players or bass enthusiasts for your ideas on what you want to read about. If you want to write a review or article, please use the contact form and get a hold of me.

The Fender Bassman: A Classic Amp

Back in 1952 when rock was and infant and blues was king Fender introduced its classic bass amplifier the Bassman. These popular amps enjoyed a pretty good run with different models being produced up until it was discontinued in 1983. When they first appeared on the scene they were meant to compliment Fender’s first mass produced consumer bass model, the Fender Precision Bass. It was all new back then, and the Fender Bassman was the answer to amplifying this great new invention. As amps evolved so did the Bassman with them.

When production ceased on new models of the Fender Bassman in the 80’s it did not decrease their popularity. Many musicians were still using them, or desperately searching for used models of the 1950’s classics long after they stopped making new ones. Fender realized this was the case and in the 1990’s actually released throwback versions of one their most popular model the 1959 Bassman. The most popular of which featured four 10” Jensen speakers complete with classic lacquered tweed covering.

While these classic models were originally intended for bass guitar their quality was too much to pass on and have commonly been used by guitarists and keyboards alike. In fact the original reissue of the 1959 5F6A version was actually classified as an electric guitar amp despite remaining faithful to the original bass amp design. The original tweed covering that was so distinctive of the Fender Bassman back in the 1950’s, and which gave it a much more raw sound is still sought after by musicians today. This gave way to several different faceplate models throughout the decades including Blonde, Blackface, and Silverface which in comparison offered a cleaner sound and were redesigned to offer more headroom for the speakers.

Very recently in 2009 Fender decided to give the series a rebirth with their rerelease of the classic late 50’s tweed model Bassman. They dubbed the series the Fender Bassman TV and included different sub-models such as the TV 10, TV Duo 10, TV 12, and TV 15. These all ranged from 150 watts up to 350 watts, as well as having 10” – 12” speakers depending on which model of course. They also modernized them a bit with features such as a 3 band equalizer, XLR output, Gain, Master Volume, and several switches to effect the high and low frequencies.

There’s a reason why the Fender Bassman series has built its reputation up over the decades. Not only were they the first Bass amps made to accompany their electric bass guitars, but they have such a uniquely raw sound that many bass players still strive for today. Ever since Monk Montgomery first took his electric bass on tour it has become the instrument of choice for rhythm sections all over the globe just as the Bassman will continue to be the amp of choice for so many bassists in the years to come.

Which Bass Guitar Amps Are Best for You

There are several factors that need to go into your decision when looking at the different bass guitar amps available. The very least of which is how much are you willing to spend. This is going to help determine lots of things from the size of the speakers, to the wattage of the output, and even the technology that goes behind it. Maybe you’re looking for a good sounding amp to learn on before you take the plunge, or are you looking for an amp that you can grow into? Before you make that decision here are a few things to consider.

If cost is your main concern then you’re probably going to want to overlook a tube amp. Most of the lower cost bass guitar amps are going to be built with solid state technology. In a lot of ways they’re much better than their analog counterparts. You’re going to be able to get much more volume for the wattage you put into them and they’re sturdier in design. For performing you might want to test their overdrive capabilities since solid state technology tends to lend itself to distortion when cranked way up.

If you’re looking for bass guitar amps that offer a wide range of effects and features built-in then choosing one that supports modeling is going to be your thing. These modeling amps can emulate the sounds of many well known bass amps, cabinets, and effects. They’re even able to emulate different combinations of cabinets and microphones. For many bass players finding that perfect tone that sets them apart is crucial. Having this range of features available to you without the need to purchase extra equipment is something modern amp technology has made possible.

When it comes to deciding what size amp you should get there is a bit more to consider than just speaker size alone. Sure a bigger speaker is able to vibrate more and handle the lower frequency notes conducive to a bass guitar, but the cabinet design also plays a crucial role. Many smaller designs are just as capable of putting out a powerful low B using 4×10” speakers thanks to solid cabinet design. It comes down to personal preference in a lot of cases, so try different sizes to see what fits your needs best.

Choosing from the multitude of bass guitar amps available can be a bit overwhelming, especially if you don’t know exactly what you’re looking for. Many newer models offer incredible sound with a wide range of effects that are perfect for all different kinds of players. If you’re a purist looking for a warm analog sound then choosing a tube amp might be more your thing. Your best bet is to take a little time and research all the different choices available to you before making your final decision.

Why A Behringer Amplifier is Your Best Choice

There are few companies that have consistently produced quality bass amps like Behringer has. In my experience a good Behringer amplifier is going to give you a smooth tone whether you’re practicing at home or performing for a crowd. This is because they understand what makes a good bass amp and refuse to compromise with quality. For over 20 years they’ve been bringing musician’s quality equipment that they produce in their own state of the art factory. This means no outsourcing, no shoddy craftsmanship, and no surprises.

In fact, because of their reputation for quality you’re able to buy a Behringer amplifier in over 107 countries across the world. Music is the universal language, and Behringer is the brand musician’s everywhere keep going back to. I can personally attest to their quality. When I bought my first bass guitar back in the early 90’s I was a little obsessed to say the least with finding a quality amp. Asking around I got a lot of different answers, but they all led back to the same point. If you’re looking to find professional quality equipment at the lowest price then Behringer in the best option.

This is because of their founder Uli Behringer’s commitment to offer just that. He coined the phrase “Prosumer” to describe his line of amplifiers and was obsessed with giving musician’s tons of professional quality features for a low price. He accomplished this not by outsourcing to the lowest bidder, but by using his expertise to develop new equipment for the consumer market. Believe it or not the speakers in every Behringer amplifier are built in house. This means they mold the cones, manufacture their own parts, and even wind their own voice coils.

What this all means to you as the consumer is that the extra effort Behringer puts into their products is going to come out in the quality of sound they produce. Whether you’re looking for a lower wattage 8” amp or want to fill a room with massive 15” speakers you’re not going to be disappointed. I’m not the only one who’s fallen in love with my Behringer, and I won’t be the last.

I can sit here all day and rant about how good they sound, but chances are you’ll want to experience it for yourself. Take a trip down to your local music store or find a friend that already has one. This is the best way to know what I’m talking about. I guarantee you’re going to fall in love with the smooth tones a Behringer amplifier puts out.

A Replacement Bass Guitar Speaker for Your Amp Cabinet

It’s not uncommon over time for a bass guitar speaker to blow out and develop a buzz. This can range from a minor annoyance to rendering the amp unusable. Luckily you’re not going to have to purchase an entirely new amp. Instead many musicians choose to purchase a replacement speaker and install it in their existing cabinet. If you’ve never done anything like this before it’s not as difficult as it may sound. On top of that you’ll end up saving yourself a lot of money, and may even end up with a better sounding amp then you originally had.

Step 1 Determine Speaker Size

Determining the size of your existing bass guitar speaker is the first and most important step you need to take. Most cabinets are custom fit to a certain size, so purchasing one that’s too large or too small can cause a big headache when you try to install it. The average range of bass speakers is from 8” up to 15” in diameter. The actual size of the speaker has less to do with the quality of sound than you may think. The cabinet design has more to do with how it handles the lowest frequency put out by your open low B-string than the size of the speaker itself.

Step 2 Determine Correct Speaker Type

It’s very important that when dealing with a bass guitar that you purchase the correct type of speakers. In order to produce the low frequency sounds required by a bass guitar both the diameter of the speaker and range of vibration needs to be correct. This is something a normal guitar speaker is not able to accomplish and is why you get a much different tone when plugging into a normal guitar amp. Mixing a replacement bass guitar speaker with a normal guitar speaker is going to produce a subpar sound.

Step 3 Do Cabinet Maintenance

When replacing the speakers it may be a good time to do some basic maintenance on your bass guitar cabinet as well. Naturally these cabinets vibrate more and require a more sturdy construction and thicker material. Replacing the corner caps as well as the speaker screens may be necessary depending on how rough you treat it. Also when you’re done replacing the speaker it’s very important that the cabinet be properly sealed. This will help the speakers vibrate properly. There needs to be resistance pushing back on the speakers which can be lost if air is escaping.

The bottom line is that replacing your bass guitar speaker when one becomes damaged or you’re looking to upgrade is a great alternative to purchasing an entirely new amp. Often times you may be able to find a great bass amp cabinet that someone is selling cheap because the speakers have blown out as well. There are quite a few different model speakers available, so take a look at the different reviews before making your final decision.

Bass effects will take your sound to the next level

It’s really hard to believe that such a flexible piece of equipment can come in such small and affordable package. Along with a compressor to help level off the output, this v amp bass brings to the table 23 speaker cabinet simulations, 32 different amp models, and 16 down-stream effects. Did I mention it also has a pretty good built-in tuner? You’re also going to be able to hook it directly to your PC via the midi (in/out/through) ports which can be used to customize patches in any of the 125 memory banks. This is assuming you ever get bored with the factory presets, all of which offer a very unique playing experience.

Ready To Take Your Playing To Another Level? ===>>> Behringer V Amp Bass

With so many different preset effects it’s not going to be hard to find one that you like with little or no tweaking. That being said there were several presets that many would consider overpowered for what they’re looking for in a pleasant bass sound. This is most likely due to the fact that many of the features of this v amp bass model are in actually designed to take advantage of both guitars and keyboards as well. With that being said however, the built in down-stream effects can be used with the different speaker models and amps to create a very impressive variety of sounds.

This is not to say that the simulation of the different bass speakers alone is nothing less than impressive. This can be especially useful for those who are looking to get the absolute best sound out of your bass without buying expensive speakers and amps. The foundation it provides with the presets will help you build layers that can produce sounds and combinations you may have otherwise not tried.

One of the best features I’ve found with this Behringer V Amp bass model is the heavy duty foot switch that allows you to easily switch between presets. This allows very smooth and easy transitions when playing both live and also for recording. The accessories included are of a similar quality, for example the zip carrying bag is a nice touch and adds to the portability.

Overall there are very few complaints that anyone could bring up given the sheer amount of features for the price point. After spending many hours playing with the presets and creating my own tones I’m more than happy with the results. Being able to use a v amp bass with my existing speakers to get an array of authentic sounds is exactly what I was looking for. If you’re looking for ways to take your bass to the next level, then this is the perfect fit for you.

One of the questions that many rock guitarists ask is if running pedals, specifically distortion pedals, will ruin a bass guitar amplifier. As a bass player you may wonder why on earth a guitarist would use a bass amp. Well the answer is simple. A bass guitar amplifier is usually much more resilient, especially the speakers.

Many guitarists buy bass guitar amplifiers for just this reason. Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers guitarist Mike Campbell and Scott Holt who played guitar with Buddy Guy used the popular Fender Bassman 50 watt in a 4×10 configuration. One caveat would be to make sure you don’t buy a low watt practice amp. These are not made to take the beating of playing with a band.

What bass guitar amp should a guitarist look for? Since bass guitars amplifiers have heavier magnets for the speakers and the transformers are much stronger, most bass guitar amplifiers will work as a good general purpose amplifier. You will get a different tone since most bass guitar amplifiers are made for lower frequencies, but it is possible to adjust for that with the controls on many models.

I would look at the frequency range of any bass guitar amplifier that I was considering purchasing. Also, if you want to play lead guitar and are looking for screaming distortion and tone at the higher ranges, I would definitely look at a guitar amplifier versus a bass guitar amplifier.

Your best bet is to go to a music store that will allow you to try the amp at concert volume and see for yourself what the tonal characteristics are. You may be surprised and find out that the durability of a bass guitar amplifier is worth looking into. You wouldn’t be the first to use one on a live or studio gig.

I was on tour playing guitar in 1988 and our semi full of equipment and stage gear flipped in Arizona. My guitar amp was trash, but the bass players Fender bass amp survived with a little bit of scuffing on the cabinet. At least I got a new amp from the insurance, but it wasn’t fun playing that night through the house PA with my pedals.
